Patriots Camp August 2021

So Sunday the 8th, I took an opportunity to drive to Foxborough and see Patriots training camp.

First guy out was undrafted free agent kicker Quinn Nordin. Only UDFA guy in camp and he’s trying to unseat the venerable Nick Folk.

Patriots 1st round pick Mac Jones trots on to the field.

Yeah, some guy had a (punter) Jake Bailey jersey on, but the real issue for me was the guy in the background wearing an Ochocinco jersey.

Jones warms up while 3rd year QB Jarrett Stidham watches. Stidham, once the heir apparent to Tom Brady, had back surgery recently to alleviate pain when throwing the ball and should be available in the middle of the season.

During some kind of pass-rush or line drill, ex-linebacker Jerod Mayo (no hat) stands next to ex-defensive coordinator and current very large man Matt Patricia.

In an offense only drill with coaches occupying defensive positions, Mac Jones drops back to pass.

The quarterbacks all did this - practiced taking the snap from center.

Ex - Patriots receiver Troy Brown coaches 2nd year tight end Devin Asiasi.

Then it was 3rd year receiver (and undrafted free agent) Jakobi Meyers’s turn. Coach Brown looks like he’s in much better shape than wide receiver Troy Brown ever was.

A currently nameless coach works with tight end Matt LaCosse

Brown continues his work with wide receiver Gunner Olszewski, another undrafted free agent.

Simon says: hands on hips.

Quarterback Cam Newton celebrates with 3rd year wide receiver N’Keal Harry after Harry made a spectacular catch of a Newton pass.

Punt blocking drill.

Punter Jake Bailey, who made the Pro Bowl last year.

Gunner Olszewski is also a punt returner. Here, he calls for a fair catch.

N’Keal Harry heads out on a route.

Left Tackle Trent Brown is still a large man.

Mac Jones and Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach Josh McDaniels hung out a lot.

These drills are called ‘7 on 7s’, but my teachers at Elden H Johnson Elementary School in Weymouth would have said they were 6 on 8s as there were 6 offensive players and 8 defensive ones.

At the conclusion of practice, Head Coach Bill Belichick is the center of attention.

Coach McDaniels has a few words with his position group - Brian Hoyer, Mac Jones, Jarrett Stidham, Cam Newton and Jake Dolegala. Sadly Dolegala was waived the day after this.

Last 2 guys off the field - Jones and Olszewski.

Stuff from a Previous Life

I will update this as scanning time allows.

Back in the 80s I worked at a night club and freelanced at a photo studio during the day. When the chance presented itself, I would sometimes shoot the acts and the people who came to see them. Mostly shot on TMax P3200, pushed a bit. Recently re-discovered the negatives up in the attic and found a way to scan them on an old Epson flatbed. And Voila!

1988, I think. The Channel, Boston. It was one of a few shows per year that brought out the bikers. Foghat? George Thorogood? Can't remember.

OK so here's one from the same roll o' film.

"Roy Orbison needed to pick up a few extra bucks before the show..." :)

The Orbison show was in December 1988, so I'm guessing the biker pic was in 88 as well.

Punks take a break in the Pit, 18+ show, 1985.

The Neighborhoods

"Everything stinks + so do we...."
Punk show over the holidays, December 1985.

And this guy? he came out to see the Meat Puppets.

Ladies and gentlemen, the, um, Circle Jerks. Note the Channel security guy to the right and a couple of other muscular individuals up there as well. Ya see, at these shows there was a lot of slam-dancing and attempted stage diving. The reason stage diving was discouraged was not that the club was anti-fun or anything - it was because as soon as someone gets hurt, who has to pay their lawyers to go defend their license to operate (not to mention their liquor license and their right to keep their money) when someone's parents get upset? You guessed it, the club does. So stage diving had to be actively prevented. The more you know...

Holiday punk crowd at the Meat Puppets show, which, looking the people over, seems to have been an all ages show. Band on stage may be Gang Green. Anyway, what's interesting to me about this is the complete lack of cell phones and cigarette lighters.

The late Chrissy Amphlett, of Divinyls.

Lizzie Borden and the Axes and…

… a fan of Lizzie Borden and the Axes

My favorite band: Tribe

Keyboard. vocals: Terry Brosius

Activity in the back yard, lately

A chipmunk, almost sunset

Young rabbit enjoying some grass.

Young buck stopped by for something to eat.

King of the world

And this goldfinch was getting pretty defensive / aggressive towards his own reflection in the window pane.

Turkey fight

First things first - both birds survived intact (yeah, there was a little blood), the matter was settled and they parted like gentlemen.

Anyway, a male was courting a female when an interloper arrived and I thought: "Whoa, there's going to be a fight", and I reached for the camera and eventually snuck outside when the action moved out of my view. Here we go:

The interloper arrives - female in background

There was a lot of just pushing, trying to establish dominance

It's all good fun until somebody tries to eat somebody else's head.

You can see a little blood on their foreheads

Living dinosaurs

More pushing

Strike! My apologies for the old flower pot in the foreground. :)

The guy in the foreground is almost exhausted

And the match is decided.

The victor follows for a little while, just to be sure the other guy doesn't come back right away.

Patriots Parade - Super Bowl LIII

So my friend Pete and I met up at Park St. Station to see if we could shoot anything worthwhile today. As always with these things, you only get pictures of the people that are on your side of the street. This year, Tom Brady, Bob Kraft, Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman were all on the other side, so I kind of missed them. If you have any issues with that, I suggest you take it up with them. Thank you.

Jaguars fan still upset about last year’s AFC Championship game. I had to tell him that, actually, by rule, Myles Jack was indeed down.

Thank you 11

There is no makeup job so perfect that it can’t be tweaked by your friends.

I like horses.

Piggy back through the Common

Video or it didn’t happen.

Not this old boy’s first rodeo, I’d say.

A girl and her plastic helmet with the authentic signatures.

Way up on the roof

Have homemade trophy….(and yes, that’s Pete doing the photobombing thing behind the football)

…. will travel.

The duck boats approach…

Bob and Jonathan Kraft

Jonathan Kraft and, I think, NFL Hall of Famer Ty Law

This guy.

Bill Belichick, and, unless I miss my guess, Linda

Nate Ebner - special teams

Can we just go home?

No idea who this guy is, but he seems pretty enthusiastic about the number six.

Vivian Brady is working the GoPro.

James White - hero of the Super Bowl a couple of years ago.

Tons of people came out - great weather, an interminable 90-odd days between championship parades, you know the story….

Two O-linemen - Joe Thuney and David Andrews

The Bud Light King? What?

The girl in the acetate window

Cheerleaders, Pat Patriot

The linebackers - Dont’a Hightower, Kyle Van Noy, Elandon Roberts (with trophy) and rookie Ja’Whaun Bentley. Bentley, a promising young player, got hurt at the start of the season and spent the rest of the year on Injured Reserve.

Brandon King - special teams

Let’s Party

Joe Cardona points the way to Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman, who was ON THE OTHER SIDE, so I couldn’t see him. Bearded guy in the ball cap and glasses is place kicker Stephen Gostkowski.

When we got back to Tremont St. from Boylston to see if we could get some more stuff, we were confronted with this huge mass of humanity which pretty much prevented us from getting much else. That’s Bill Belichick again, way out there, waving his cap.

It’s a Lombardi party.

GOAT mask.

OK - did manage to get a shot of Tom Brady. His son Ben is to camera left. The guy waving the ‘baddest’ T-shirt is rookie 3rd string quarterback Danny Etling - the future of the franchise.

And now, we have to try to cut our way out of this mess….

Flyover

So a couple of MA Air National Guard F-15s had some time to kill before doing the flyover for the Harvard/Yale game. Apparently they used my house as some kind of waypoint to circle around.

The leader

The Instagram version.

Red Sox Rally

So yeah, I hadn’t planned to go to the Red Sox rally, but I got this feeling that some people I know would prefer that I did, so I said ‘what the hell, you only live once’, so I went. I also figured that there would be a bunch of people in costume since it was, after all, Halloween. Well there weren’t many, but I did get a few.

As for sound and smell, run a continuous loop of ‘Tessie’, ‘Sweet Caroline, a touch of ‘Shipping Up To Boston’ and the occasional ‘Yankees Suck!’ chant through your head while almost getting a contact high from something that was recently legalized, and you’ll have a pretty good feel for the ambience.

This girl was engrossed in her phone and I thought the contrast between that lack of activity and presence and the bustling surroundings was worth a shot, but the wry smile as the religious guy passed was probably the better picture.

One of my favorites.

Cats in the Hats

Selfie Stick

Lotta this going on.

Alice, Marcia and Mrs. Brady of The Brady Bunch.

Pedro

Holy Crap, they engrave the bottom?

David Ortiz

Manager Alex Cora

Victory Cigar

Mitch ‘Mitchy Two Bags’ Moreland

Rick Porcello

Jim Rice

Dustin Pedroia with some odd WWE wrestling belt with the Red Sox logo on it.

Jackie Bradley and his daughter

Not sure if that’s Drew Pomeranz or not but I think I can say for sure that the girl is a future NHL star.

Christian Vasquez

I honest to god have no idea what this is.

Pretty

This guy is a couple of holidays too early.

In the middle of a Yankees Suck chant

Um…. idiots.

In the fish tank

Hey! Take our picture! OK.

Halloween after all.

Mookie Betts

This is why cops and medical centers are so busy at times like these.

Hey! Take our picture! Very well.
